The Story Behind The Famous REK Pic
Written by Daniel Miller on November 13, 2014
A few weeks back I got an email from one of our listeners, Michael Sabin. He was having a little technical difficulty and so we worked to get his tunes cranking again.
After a few email exchanges he challenged me to a test, on the honor system of not using Google. I was up to the challenge. He sent a picture and a challenge.
“If you know what the attached photo is of and what it was used for you will get from me an 11×14 photographic quality print of the image.”
My reply was “Well, yeah. I know! That’s the picture of REK’s car burning up.”
A few weeks later I got a print in the mail from Mr. Sabin with the story behind the image.
Here it is:
“We were documenting the picnic for Willie and the promoters and put together about 6 books. Being poor college students we did it for free tickets. Terry York was the driving force behind that and 25 years later he was at a REK concert in Utah where he was living. He heard the story about the car and on a whim managed to talk to Robert and showed him the photo, it was in the book. Robert goes “thats my car!”. This happened just before Picnic and he gave the record company my name and they tracked me down in Longview and the rest as they say is history.”
Thank you, Mr. Sabin. The photo is hanging proudly in the “Not-So-Oval Office” at the “Off-White House”.
